Interview with Emily the Intern

[caption id="attachment_2663" align="alignright" width="151" caption="Emily Cunningham"][/caption]

If you have not had the pleasure of meeting our summer intern Emily Cunningham, you are missing out! Emily studied Interior Design at Mississippi State and graduates at the end of the summer. She has been such a joy to have around the store, and we have all completely fallen in love with her! Her sense of humor and sweet spirit make her a joy to be around. Here's a little Q&A with her so you can get to know her just a little better...

SummerHouse: What is your favorite thing about working at SummerHouse?
Emily: My favorite thing about working at SummerHouse is all the amazing people I get to be around every day! Everyone here is so much fun to be around, there isn't a dull moment!

What is one of the funniest things you've witnessed or been a part of since you've been at SummerHouse?
I would definitely say that seeing KC's random dance moves and hearing her personal version of whatever song is playing makes me laugh every day.

If anyone were to make a movie about Lisa Palmer, who do you think would be a good person to play her in the movie? Why?
I would have to say Zooey Deschanel, mostly known from the movies Elf and Failure to Launch. She usually plays characters with witty personalities, and she has a beautiful voice!

What's a typical lunch for you during your work day? :)
A typical lunch for me is a turkey sandwich and chips. Recently, it has been Millie D's with cookie dough balls and M & M'S. I think I am addicted...

What is your favorite way to spend a weekend these days?
My weekends are usually spent on a jet ski at the Tombigbee river, or visiting my friends and family!

Anything else you want us to know? :)
I am SO glad that my internship was at SummerHouse! I am very lucky to have had this opportunity as my first experience in the design world!

Thanks Emily for all your hard work! Glad we have you around a little bit longer! :)

A Holly Jolly Christmas!

Yesterday, Marty, Brittany and Melanie worked hard getting all the final Christmas touches put on the store in preparation for our open house tomorrow!  Don't forget about Christmas at Colony Park from 5:00 to 8:00 tomorrow evening! There will be fun and food (and CARA animals that need good homes) for the whole family!

Even after the open house is over, be sure to visit us often as we have great new gift items arriving daily!  We also have a new station set up for you to fix a cup of coffee or warm cider so you can sip on something good while you shop! (Just make sure you don't spill any coffee on a white sofa... :) )

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!

Welcome back from the weekend! We hope you had a great one!

We wanted to remind everyone that we are going to close this Thursday (Sept. 2) and will not re-open our doors until next Tuesday (Sept. 7)  You are welcome to stop by and look in on our progress through the windows, but the store will be closed!

Behind the Scenes: VIP Photo Shoot

We were recently asked by VIP Jackson for a room to photograph for an upcoming issue.  Since one of the teen rooms we recently did turned out SO well, we decided to use that one! Here is a little behind-the-scenes sneak peek of the shoot:

New fabrics we love

Our Kravet rep came in last week to show us the new Thom Filicia collection they just introduced... It was love at first sight!  Below is a quick sample of the awesome new fabrics from this collection:

Meet the SummerHouse Girls

You know all about Lisa Palmer from reading our About section, but have you ever wanted to know a little bit more about the rest of the girls at SummerHouse?  If so, it is your lucky day!  Here is a quick introduction to all the bright, smiling faces that Lisa gets to work with every day!

[caption id="attachment_357" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Marty Smith"][/caption]

Meet Marty.  She is our business manager (or, as she calls herself, “the friendly bean counter”) and keeps us organized behind the scenes!  The girl is mean on a 10 key, and can place orders and pay bills like nobody’s business.  She also is in charge of our showroom merchandising and does an excellent job!  With new merchandise coming in every day, Marty stays extremely busy keeping our floor updated.  Visit us often, because the floor does change literally almost every day!  Thank you, Marty, for keeping this place looking as beautiful as it does!  Marty loves Ole Miss football and making her top secret salsa (to make all of us jealous that we don’t have the recipe.)

[caption id="attachment_355" align="alignright" width="300" caption="KC Cabell"][/caption]

Meet KC.  She is our happy-go-lucky receptionist!  She is probably most famous for the way she answers the phone:  “Thanks for calling SummerHouse, this is Kaaaaaay Ceeeeeee.”  There is no denying it—she is a Mississippi girl! We have even had a rep tell us that he will call the store just to hear KC answer the phone, and hang up!  Because she is married to a chef, she is always sharing some amazing food tips with all of us.  Where would we be without her?!  KC enjoys watering flowers and a good glass of sweet tea.

[caption id="attachment_354" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Katie Phillips"][/caption]

Meet Katie.  Katie is the most amazing design assistant anyone could ever ask for!  She helps the designers and the girls in the business office with whatever they need.  She also checks in all of our new samples and keeps the resource library in perfect order!  The girl has a job description that goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, and still this newlywed seems to keep it all together without ever getting frazzled!  On top of all this, she is a really talented designer.  If she is asked to find a fabric to put on this chair in that room, she does it with ease.  Katie enjoys laughing at funny things and trying to talk her husband into moving.

[caption id="attachment_356" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Laurel Donahoo"][/caption]

Meet Laurel.  Laurel  is technically Lisa’s assistant, but helps out pretty much wherever she is needed!  This girl can do wonders with a tape measure and is an expert when it comes to writing purchase orders.  With her above average height, she is good to have around when placing accessories in high places or hanging pictures.  Laurel and Katie, who is almost just as tall, make a good team whenever the short people around here need something gotten off of the top shelf! Laurel enjoys Mexican food and keeping it real.

[caption id="attachment_358" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Meagan Burks"][/caption]

Meet Meagan.  She is the newest designer to join the team at SummerHouse and is making a name for herself quite quickly!  She has had experience in all sorts of design, ranging from hospitality renovations to corporate offices to private residences.  She believes that “interior design and architecture are a means of representation, like a photograph, film, or drawing; and each project is its own unique creation based upon cultural, social, and physical conditions.”   Meagan is very creative and really enjoys a good challenge, when it comes to design.  Meagan loves road tripping to Florida and a good glass of red.

[caption id="attachment_464" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Betsy Pevey"][/caption]

Meet Betsy.  She joined the SummerHouse team in the fall of 2008 and has loved every minute of her time here! She comes from years of residential design experience.  In her personal design philosophy, her number one rule is to stay away from trends.  “Trends are so short lived and a waste of money.  If you go with high quality styles, textures and colors that are classic, they will last a lifetime.  If you want to add something trendy, try adding pillows or accessories.  Those are easier to change out after a few years.”  Betsy loves sports and prissing around the store!

[caption id="attachment_352" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Beth Black"][/caption]

Meet Beth.  Beth is our part time designer here and does a great job!  She has experience in commercial, kitchen and bath, and residential design.  She is so gifted and can pull a room together seemingly effortlessly.  “Some clients lay everything out for you and others take a little more detective work.”  When asked where she draws inspiration, Beth says, “I gain inspiration from many different things.  I love to dissect a great design magazine and I can literally spend hours on a design blog, but I think I gain most of my inspiration from the clients themselves.  I like to find one thing they love, whether it be a piece of art or a fabric or a particular style of chair and build on that.”  Beth loves spending time with her family and shopping for super cute clothes!

[caption id="attachment_351" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Melanie McGee"][/caption]

Meet Melanie.  Melanie came aboard in the fall of 2008 and is right at home at SummerHouse.  She has years of experience working not only in interior design, but in faux finishing.  “Design has been a mainstay in my life, even as a young child.  I cannot imagine a world without color, shape or texture.  It is so wonderful to work with the passion that I have for design every day.” Unearthing exactly what it is a client needs is a challenge Melanie always meets well.  “My clients’ needs are of utmost importance... Their lifestyle... How they live and how they entertain. Knowing all of that is very important when determining what can go in their homes!”  Melanie enjoys cooking and giving her dog, Olga, lots of love.

Before and After: Eastbrooke Condo

Last year, one of Lisa's clients decided he wanted to move out of his urban apartment in downtown Jackson and move into Eastbrooke in North Jackson for a little change of scenery.  Having worked on many projects with this customer before, Lisa was delighted to be asked to help.  His eclectic sense of style and fun personality make him a joy to work with!  Check out the MAJOR transformation from before to after...

[caption id="attachment_262" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Kitchen BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_272" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Kitchen AFTER"][/caption]

In the kitchen, we kept some of the existing appliances, and the original cabinet fronts.  Pretty much everything else is new:  New tile floors, new countertops and back splash, new light fixtures, new sinks, and new grasscloth on the walls.  The furniture in the area was furniture Lisa picked for the customer's previous home.

[caption id="attachment_259" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Master Bedroom BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_271" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Master Bedroom AFTER"][/caption]

The master bedroom turned out great!  It is such a cozy place for lounging and watching TV.  The wall color, carpet, drapery, and chaise lounge are new.  Everything else was from the master bedroom in a previous home, that Lisa had picked out years ago.

[caption id="attachment_274" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Master Bath AFTER"][/caption]

The master bathroom area underwent one of the most dramatic changes in the renovation.  The tiered garden tub was taken out and replaced with a beautiful solid white soaking tub.  The shower was also completely re-worked.  The vanity area was made into the client's ideal space for getting dressed and for packing to travel.  The closet was completely re-designed to house every bit of the client's wardrobe, including his steamer! All surfaces and fixtures are new, as well as the ottoman.  The fabulous existing collection of art is what really completed this space.

[caption id="attachment_258" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Dining Room BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_269" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Dining Room AFTER"][/caption]

This dining room turned out to be the perfect spot to host an intimate dinner for close friends.  The only thing that stayed the same in this room is the mirrored wall.  Lisa and the client both thought it would be a great way to pay homage to the original 80's style of the condo.  The custom strie wall finish was done by Virginia Weathersby, our favorite faux painter!  The dining chairs and table base were from a previous home and were perfect for this space.  And the sheer curtains, with a small metallic thread woven through the fabric, really add a nice ambiance when drawn.

[caption id="attachment_261" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Living Room BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_268" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Living Room AFTER"][/caption]

Look at this transformation!  After moving some walls around, tearing out the bookcases, re-doing the mantle and getting all new furniture, this place looks brand new and completely different!  The beautiful Julie Neil fixture in the living area and the custom made foyer fixture light the space beautifully.

With the custom vanity and custom wall treatment, the powder room off of the Music Room turned out to be a room like no other.

[caption id="attachment_257" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Music Room BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_270" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Music Room AFTER"][/caption]

The Music Room is one of the coziest spaces in the condo.  With the chocolate walls and chocolate drapery, how could this space not feel warm?  Most of the furniture in here is furniture Lisa picked out for the client in years past.  The newly re-worked staircase, which used to only open into the foyer, now opens into this space as well.  The iron railing was custom made to the client's specifications.  The wall finish, that also continues into the foyer, was a custom wall treatment by Virginia Weathersby.

[caption id="attachment_266" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Guest Room BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_276" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Guest Bedroom AFTER"][/caption]

With a new light fixture, new carpet, new side tables and new lamps, this room turned from boring to bold!  The bedding was from a previous home, but was so easy to work with because of all the color.  The blue lamps were custom made out of vases the client saw in SummerHouse and fell in love with.

[caption id="attachment_265" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="Guest Bath BEFORE"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_275" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="Guest Bath AFTER"][/caption]

What a difference a new paint job, new flooring and new countertops can make! We were so happy with the final result here.

A special thanks to Delta Magazine for featuring this home in their March/April issue and for allowing us to use these photographs.  Didn't their photographer do a fabulous job?
