Around Jackson: View Gallery

As our first feature in the Around Jackson series, we would like to highlight View Gallery, owned by Phyllis Geary.  View is located in Ridgeland at the Township (just a few doors down from us!) and is the showplace of many local and regional artists' work.  Paul Edelstein, Sheila Gourlay, Liz Chadwick Nichols, Sophia, Vicki Overstreet and Carol Cox Peaster are just a few of the talented people who show their art at View.

Take a look:

A quick little chat with Phyllis:

Laurel:  So why did you open your gallery?

Phyllis:  For a couple of reasons.  Ever since I incorporated original art into my design work, my passion has grown for visual art.  It transformed my design work and made me realize how essential it is when incorporated into ones home decor.  Also, owning a small business has enabled me to be more flexible with my home life.

Laurel:  How do you decide what artists to carry?

Phyllis:  As an interior designer, I am drawn to work that has a beautiful balance of color.  But I have realized that a mix of styles and techniques makes for a better display.  Therefore, I look for quality and color, texture and application.  Work that is edgy is not necessarily always good, and work that has beautiful colors is not always quality work either.  I look for unique qualities that sets the artist's work apart.

Laurel:  Cool, so what are you doing this weekend?!

Phyllis:  I will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to see some close friends and family, and do exchanges with artists from there whose work I carry.

You can visit Phyllis and View Gallery on the web at www.viewgalleryart.com.  View is also a host to the area's Art Walk every third Thursday where the gallery stays open until 8:00.

Around Jackson

We have some big news! We are starting a blog series called Around Jackson, where we will feature our favorite places in the metro Jackson area!  We will show you our favorite local shops, galleries, event spaces, restaurants, businesses and whatever else is interesting to us.  Our sweet assistant, Katie, has agreed to be made into the SummerHouse version of Flat Stanley, and will be traveling to all of our local favorites with us!  We are calling her Flat Katie, but that is ONLY because she has been made into a piece of cardboard attached to a stick.  Nothing to do with her physical appearance! We love you Katie :)

Our first Around Jackson will be posted next week! Stay tuned!

Outdoor fabrics we love...

Its SUMMER!  Which means it is time to sit by the pool by day and grill outside with friends by night!  Why not brighten up your back porch or pool deck with some functional and beautiful outdoor fabrics?  We love using outdoor fabrics not only for outdoor projects, but for indoor projects as well!  Since outdoor fabrics are so durable and easy to clean (on top of looking great!), why NOT use them inside?  They are especially great for families with small children.  Take a look at these great patterns:

Top 5 reasons why outdoor fabrics are so dear to our hearts:

  1. They are just as great indoor as they are outdoor!  (Perfect for barstools, banquettes, pillows and upholstery for kids areas, the list goes on...)
  2. They are fade resistant.  They will keep their color for YEARS.
  3. Most can be spot cleaned with mild soap and water.  If you have a cushion or pillow with a removable casing, the casing can be machine washed!
  4. If hotels and restaurants use them, then we KNOW they must be super durable.
  5. They can add a fun punch of color to an unexpected place. (A hammock, for example!)

Visual Comfort

One of our favorite lighting lines, Visual Comfort, just sent us their new product catalog for Spring 2010!  These pictures are just a few of the beautiful new things they have to offer.  The delicate Frenchy sconce, the matching chandelier, the fluted pendant light... All are just breathtaking!  Sadly, only a few of these products are currently available.  Most of them will not ship for several months...  But for now, they sure are fun to gaze at!
