"Home Away From Home" Master Bedroom Design

Lisa and Elish have a beautiful ongoing project with a very dear client who lives in a fantastic Fondren home, and the master bedroom in this home has recently been completed!

Fondren Residence by Lisa Palmer | SummerHouse, Ridgeland, MS

Lisa on this bedroom:

"When I first met with my client, the first thing I noticed about this room was that the original furnishings were out of scale. The bed was too small for the space, the side tables were too small, and the rug was too small. So my challenge was to make sure that the pieces I selected would fit in this very large room with large walls and tall ceilings."

"My client wanted a sitting area where they could watch television, but they also wanted to be able to watch television from their bed, so I had that challenge too."

"The client wanted the bedroom to be a "home away from home." My design approach was to make it light and airy and soft so I chose fabrics that were a mixture of natural linen, velvet, and even a washable velvet on the swivel chairs and ottoman in the sitting area. When you're going white on upholstery, that kind of thing is important!"

"There's a lot of custom work in this space as well. The bed, the etagere, the desk, and the side tables were all custom made. In fact, the desk was touched by four different artisans!"

"There was some renovation in the space as well. We changed an old, low cased archway by raising it and adding old beams. We redesigned the fireplace, mantle, and stonework to give it a fresh look. And we repainted all the walls."

Designer Showhouse Feature in Mississippi Magazine

{ mississippi magazine }

The latest issue of Mississippi Magazine has a wonderful 10-page spread on the Designer Showhouse out at Chestnut Hill that our very own Lisa Palmer led the design on! Be sure to pick up a copy and read the story that starts on page 182!

[caption id="attachment_1169" align="aligncenter" width="550"]Mississippi Magazine | January/February 2013 Mississippi Magazine | January/February 2013 Issue[/caption]

Here's a quick excerpt from the wonderful writeup!

"Lisa Palmer of SummerHouse in Ridgeland was chosen as lead designer. Palmer chose fundamentals-- wall colors, flooring, and tile. She shares, "I received the plans about six months prior to building. I changed the plans up quite a bit by arching doorways, adding cypress beams, rounding corners instead of using casings in openings, adding flatboard to walls and ceilings to give it more of a cottage feel. I worked with Al Bruce on the front door and added shutters instead of sidelights. I used a lot of semi-transparent stains in different mixes to achieve a unique look."

Mississippi Magazine | January/February 2013

We hope you enjoy this story, and the rest of the issue, as much as we did!

Designers' Library

Have you ever wondered, of all the thousands of design books floating around out there, which ones are frequently used by actual designers?

(There are more than one or two of us up here who have about 15 sitting in a shopping cart on Amazon right now, so we know we're not alone when choosing which ones to invest in!)

We took a quick survey amongst our design staff to find out which books they most love to reference when working on projects. When in need of a little outside inspiration, our design staff turns to....

LISA PALMER'S PICK:
THE HOME WITHIN US by Bobby McAlpine

"It's my design Bible!"
The Home Within Us | SummerHouse Designers' Library

ELISH PHARES' PICK:
THE WELL-DRESSED HOME by Annette Tatum

"I love The Well-Dressed Home by Annette Tatum. I love the parallel it draws between personal style and how that is reflected in interiors."
The Well-Dressed Home | SummerHouse Designers' Library

BETSY PEVEY'S PICK:
GLAMOROUS ROOMS by Jan Showers

"Jan is a Dallas-based designer and has such an elegance in her designs. She loves to pull in a Zebra rug as an unexpected pop in the room. Is is the way she pulls colors and finishes that I love. Very simple and elegant!"
Glamorous Rooms | SummerHouse Designers' Library

CHELSEA SIRMONS' PICK:
AROUND BEAUTY by Barbara Barry

"The new Barbara Barry book is beautiful. I love her style! This is my new go-to!"
Around Beauty | SummerHouse Designers' Library

LINDSEY TOWNSEND'S PICK:
BLACK & WHITE (AND A BIT IN BETWEEN) by Celerie Kemble

"I love Celerie's use of different textures and her variations of black, white, and gray with pops of color."
Black & White (and a bit in between) | SummerHouse Designers' Library

TINA PATEL'S PICK:
DESIGN-SEEDS.COM

"It's a blog, not a book. But they have all of these great color combinations pulled together from amazing pictures!"
Design-Seed | SummerHouse Designers' Library

Most of the books mentioned, plus many others, are available at SummerHouse!

ELIZABETH GULLETT'S PICK:
INSPIRED INTERIORS by Suzanne Kasler

"Her mix of fresh, current color with old world elegance and thoughtful, classic detailing is unsurpassed in my opinion."

Suzanne Kasler - A favorite of SummerHouse designer Elizabeth Gullett!

TODD PRINCE'S PICK:
LIVING WITH COLOUR by Farrow and Ball

"I'm really digging this book right now. It is so tasteful, simple, and shows a huge range of styles. The whole book is styled perfectly and the book uses color in so many cool ways to create a look. This book has been my color combo inspiration for a while!!!  Love it."

Farrow and Ball - A favorite of SummerHouse designer Todd Prince!

Behind The Scenes Of Yesterday's Photo Shoot!

{( i'm ready for my photo! )}

We had so much fun yesterday getting one of our favorite client's homes ready for a photo shoot! James Patterson worked his magic behind the lens capturing some gorgeous photos of this even more gorgeous home!
Marty, Elish, and Lisa did a great job of primping the house, making sure everything was camera-ready!

SummerHouse | Ridgeland, MS

This home, although beautiful on the outside, is even moreso on the inside... Get ready!

SummerHouse | Ridgeland, MS

James is a self-proclaimed "compulsive picture straightener." We can totally relate, James!

SummerHouse | Ridgeland, MS

He and his assistant did a great job of capturing some really wonderful shots. The rest of the photos are quick shots we took of the interior so you can have something to look forward to when we get the professional photos back from James.
This house is drop. dead. gorgeous. as you can probably see :)

After all the primping was complete, Marty, Elish, and Lisa took a well-deserved lunch break! Who doesn't love a good sandwich from Broad Street Bakery?!

Stay tuned for more [professional] photos from this shoot in the very near future!
