Color Issue Sneak Peek!

Our new friend Aarean, editor and publisher of the beautiful new blog Color Issue, asked us to do a guest blog post for her talking about how to add warmth to a room. Her blog focuses on the importance of color, so several of us gave our two cents about the importance of warmth in interiors! The post is scheduled to go live tomorrow (Saturday, 11/19) on the Color Issue site, so keep your eyes peeled! Here's a sneak peek at one of the rooms we thought was a great use of color to create warmth.
Be sure to read the full post tomorrow!

**11/21 Addendum: Due to a mix-up with Aarean's scheduling sofware and the fact that she is out of town, it will be next week before this post goes up! We are still very excited about it and hope you are too!**

Jolly Orthodontics

Happy Monday to you all! We hope you had a wonderful weekend! We've got a really great commercial space to show you today! Designer Betsy Pevey worked closely with Dr. Priscilla Jolly and her husband Jason on their new orthodontics clinic, Jolly Orthodontics, in The Renaissance right here in Ridgeland!  This was a fun project for Betsy because she was involved from the very beginning and was able to make many preliminary decisions. (Quick little reminder: SummerHouse designers don't only do residential design. We love commercial projects, like this one, too!)

The Jolly's wanted the space to be modern with clean lines and a comfortable feel. The color palette they specified was soft greys, aquas, and yellows. Love it! Since most of the Priscilla's clients are teenagers, the Jolly's wanted to space to be really inviting and interesting.

The big windows in the waiting room allow for lots of natural light to flood the space, making it extra cozy. Betsy had a custom 12' banquette built to fit the curve of one of the walls in the waiting area and to provide some great seating. To make it look like an actual piece of furniture rather than a built in, our talented furniture builder/upholsterer added some beautiful legs to achieve that look. Betsy and the Jolly's were so pleased with the turn out! The LEE chairs in the waiting area also turned out beautifully, done in a commercial contemporary fabric with all the colors the Jolly's wanted. To incorporate some chairs that the Jolly's found on their own, Betsy was careful to choose fabrics that tied everything together.

The clinic side of the space is more high tech with dental chair stations and computers. The interior ceiling and exposed duct work is all part of the modern design! There is also another great looking built-in in this space with local artist Dyann Gunter's art hanging above it. This space turned out very nicely.

Betsy had a great time on this project. "I truly loved working with Priscilla and Jason on their new clinic. They knew exactly what they wanted and we were able to achieve just that. What an awesome space!!"

Well said, Betsy! And great work! :)

A Beautiful Before and After

Designer Betsy Pevey and one of her favorite clients Marsha have been working together for over a year now pulling together a new look for her home. Here's what Betsy has to say about the project:

Marsha wanted to do a total updated  and fresh look.  The last time she had decorated was about 11 years ago.  She and I worked so great together.  She did want to keep her area rug, so we softened the palette around the colorful rug which has teal, gold, sage and salmon in it. Some of the art was re-matted and reframed.  She purchased some new art also.  My favorite piece is the hide ottoman in the center of the living room which she uses as her cocktail table.  Marsha is a wonderful client to work with.  We are currently working on guest bedrooms and an upper landing area which serves as a small den.

Here are some before photos to give you an idea of what Marsha's space looked like before...

Beautiful job, Betsy! What a difference! We can't wait to see the next phase of before and afters!

Designer Spotlight: Betsy Pevey

[caption id="attachment_464" align="alignright" width="120" caption="Betsy Pevey"][/caption]

This week, designer Betsy Pevey shares a little bit about what has been catching her eye these days.  Her love for art, color and the great outdoors are truly inspiring.  Take a look...

"A painting definitely makes a room.  I am always thrilled with artists Lauren Barksdale and Dyann Gunter.  Lauren's beautiful birds and landscapes, and Dyann's abstracts and nudes are so versatile.  I think art is SO important , in any space."

"My favorite color right now is paprika.  It looks great with light hues, like golds and off whites, or darker hues like charcoals, taupes, and dark blues.  That color just has an energy that makes me happy!  I actually just finished up four custom pillows to bring that color into a neutral room.  We used a paprika linen with gold embroidery, and backed it in paprkia velvet. They turned out great.  A couple of my favorite fabrics with paprika are by Raoul and Galbraith and Paul"

"My favorite place at my own house right now is my patio.  Outdoor spaces are the ticket to relaxation... A place to unwind and enjoy with family and friends.  I love the multi-use of a garden seat.  They are great indoor and outdoor, and are an easy way to add a pop of color.  I am also loving the new outdoor introductions by LEE Industries.  They have some new outdoor fabrics that are beautiful and easy to clean."

Meet the SummerHouse Girls

You know all about Lisa Palmer from reading our About section, but have you ever wanted to know a little bit more about the rest of the girls at SummerHouse?  If so, it is your lucky day!  Here is a quick introduction to all the bright, smiling faces that Lisa gets to work with every day!

[caption id="attachment_357" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Marty Smith"][/caption]

Meet Marty.  She is our business manager (or, as she calls herself, “the friendly bean counter”) and keeps us organized behind the scenes!  The girl is mean on a 10 key, and can place orders and pay bills like nobody’s business.  She also is in charge of our showroom merchandising and does an excellent job!  With new merchandise coming in every day, Marty stays extremely busy keeping our floor updated.  Visit us often, because the floor does change literally almost every day!  Thank you, Marty, for keeping this place looking as beautiful as it does!  Marty loves Ole Miss football and making her top secret salsa (to make all of us jealous that we don’t have the recipe.)

[caption id="attachment_355" align="alignright" width="300" caption="KC Cabell"][/caption]

Meet KC.  She is our happy-go-lucky receptionist!  She is probably most famous for the way she answers the phone:  “Thanks for calling SummerHouse, this is Kaaaaaay Ceeeeeee.”  There is no denying it—she is a Mississippi girl! We have even had a rep tell us that he will call the store just to hear KC answer the phone, and hang up!  Because she is married to a chef, she is always sharing some amazing food tips with all of us.  Where would we be without her?!  KC enjoys watering flowers and a good glass of sweet tea.

[caption id="attachment_354" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Katie Phillips"][/caption]

Meet Katie.  Katie is the most amazing design assistant anyone could ever ask for!  She helps the designers and the girls in the business office with whatever they need.  She also checks in all of our new samples and keeps the resource library in perfect order!  The girl has a job description that goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, and still this newlywed seems to keep it all together without ever getting frazzled!  On top of all this, she is a really talented designer.  If she is asked to find a fabric to put on this chair in that room, she does it with ease.  Katie enjoys laughing at funny things and trying to talk her husband into moving.

[caption id="attachment_356" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Laurel Donahoo"][/caption]

Meet Laurel.  Laurel  is technically Lisa’s assistant, but helps out pretty much wherever she is needed!  This girl can do wonders with a tape measure and is an expert when it comes to writing purchase orders.  With her above average height, she is good to have around when placing accessories in high places or hanging pictures.  Laurel and Katie, who is almost just as tall, make a good team whenever the short people around here need something gotten off of the top shelf! Laurel enjoys Mexican food and keeping it real.

[caption id="attachment_358" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Meagan Burks"][/caption]

Meet Meagan.  She is the newest designer to join the team at SummerHouse and is making a name for herself quite quickly!  She has had experience in all sorts of design, ranging from hospitality renovations to corporate offices to private residences.  She believes that “interior design and architecture are a means of representation, like a photograph, film, or drawing; and each project is its own unique creation based upon cultural, social, and physical conditions.”   Meagan is very creative and really enjoys a good challenge, when it comes to design.  Meagan loves road tripping to Florida and a good glass of red.

[caption id="attachment_464" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Betsy Pevey"][/caption]

Meet Betsy.  She joined the SummerHouse team in the fall of 2008 and has loved every minute of her time here! She comes from years of residential design experience.  In her personal design philosophy, her number one rule is to stay away from trends.  “Trends are so short lived and a waste of money.  If you go with high quality styles, textures and colors that are classic, they will last a lifetime.  If you want to add something trendy, try adding pillows or accessories.  Those are easier to change out after a few years.”  Betsy loves sports and prissing around the store!

[caption id="attachment_352" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Beth Black"][/caption]

Meet Beth.  Beth is our part time designer here and does a great job!  She has experience in commercial, kitchen and bath, and residential design.  She is so gifted and can pull a room together seemingly effortlessly.  “Some clients lay everything out for you and others take a little more detective work.”  When asked where she draws inspiration, Beth says, “I gain inspiration from many different things.  I love to dissect a great design magazine and I can literally spend hours on a design blog, but I think I gain most of my inspiration from the clients themselves.  I like to find one thing they love, whether it be a piece of art or a fabric or a particular style of chair and build on that.”  Beth loves spending time with her family and shopping for super cute clothes!

[caption id="attachment_351" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Melanie McGee"][/caption]

Meet Melanie.  Melanie came aboard in the fall of 2008 and is right at home at SummerHouse.  She has years of experience working not only in interior design, but in faux finishing.  “Design has been a mainstay in my life, even as a young child.  I cannot imagine a world without color, shape or texture.  It is so wonderful to work with the passion that I have for design every day.” Unearthing exactly what it is a client needs is a challenge Melanie always meets well.  “My clients’ needs are of utmost importance... Their lifestyle... How they live and how they entertain. Knowing all of that is very important when determining what can go in their homes!”  Melanie enjoys cooking and giving her dog, Olga, lots of love.
